Transmission Repair F.A.Q.

Because of the many E-mails asking for specific repair advice, I decided to start this section .

Diagnostic Trouble Codes | OBD II
On 1996 and later vehicles Federal Government regulations mandate that OBD II codes P0001 through P0999 must be defined in a specific way and must be used by all manufactures. OBD II codes P1000 through P1999 can be defined in any way the manufacturers choose.

So when dealing with codes "P1" is Manufacture specific..."P0" is generic. Sometimes referred to as "GEM codes"
The second number "P0100" relates to the area of the problem...ie. emissions, ignition, transmission,
Transmission code are generally P07XX, P08XX and P09XX. However a full list of codes is necessary to trouble shoot because input from non transmission components can effect transmission function. For example a code P0101 "Mass Air Flow System Performance" can cause late-hard shifts or early-soft shifts as well as effect engine performance.

Here is a list of OBD II Codes and there definitions.
P0100 -P0180    P0181 -P0432    P0433 -P0750    P0751 -P0785

Having Codes and definitions is just the start. Next you need to be able to evaluate what the code means
A good way to get help there is doing a google search using search terms such as "obd code P01XX diagnostic" or "obd P0180 diagnostic". Also try all in text searching. If your not fermilure with it its is entered...

My shifter won't come out of park. To shift out of park one or two things must happen. First when you depress the brake a solenoid or cable releases a lock. A defective solenoid, relay or a blown fuse or a broken or improperly adjusted cable can be the cause. Some console shifters have a bypass. It may look like a place to insert the key or a round plug that will pop out.
The button on console shifters when depressed pushes down on a rod that runs down the shaft. That rod releases a lever designed to keep you from accidentally knocking your shifter from drive to reverse. The button or rod can wear or break. On Crown Vic / Grand Marque column shifters the torx bolts at the end of the shifter (under the dash) frequently loosen.

My car makes a whining noise and stops moving when it gets hot. If I let it sit it goes again. The problem here is most likely a clogged filter. As the Pump strains to pick up fluid through the sump it makes noise. When the car sits the debris back washes from the filter...and it moves again, until the debris is sucked back in. You can try changing the filter...But in most cases this is the beginning of the end.

It feels like I'm going over a wash board when I drive around 45 mph. Torque converter shutter can cause this. The torque converter is what couples the engine to the transmission like a clutch does on a standard transmission. The torque converter is a fluid coupling, however at around 45 mph it becomes a mechanical coupling. If the clutches don't engage properly it will chatter. The first thing to do is remove and replace ALL the transmission fluid. Also note using the wrong type fluid can cause this problem.

Here's two things that can fool the best A vehicle seems like its slipping...But it's an audio illusion. If the clutch fan (engine cooling fan) seize up the resulting noise makes it seem like the RPM is really high. If you've never experienced this it can trick you. Grab the blades of the fan when the engine is OFF and cool and it doesn't turn freely...That's your slipping.
Another one is... My engine stalls when I put it into gear...usually reverse. If that happens to you...Look closely at the plastic accordion shaped part between the air filter and intake. Usually the underside develops a crack and when the vehicle is put into gear the crack opens, drawing in unmetered air.
My engine stalls when I put it into gear can also be due to a torque converter clutch stuck on. They can stick on for mechanical or electronic reasons. On some early 3 speed FWD GM vehicles you can unplug the connector at the front / side of the transmission. If its is OK then, the odds are the TCC solenoid is bad.

My speedometer stopped working on my Dodge Caravan and it won't shift Checking codes for a defective input or output speed sensor is the place to start. It is a common failure on Caravan | Breeze | Voyager | Stratus | Shadow | Sundance vehicles equipped with the A604 ( 41TE) transmission. This is also one of the few vehicles that the Transmission control module (TCM) goes bad on.
Weird as it may seem...It is a better sign on these vehicles if they don't shift right from the get go...than if they shift and then stop after you've driven a while...Why ?...When you first start the vehicle a system check takes place...If a problem is found the unit goes into fail safe mode. The problem is almost always electronic. If you are driving at the system detects a slip...when you get to a slow enough speed it will fail safe. More times than not a major problem..But never assume...
This transmission often come in with a hole in the case where the differential gear shaft shot through. The common denominators...Got stuck in the snow...and worn front tires.

I stopped to pay a toll and my Ford Taurus wouldn't move The odds are the transmission gear train seized up. It was so hot that when you stopped moving they welded together. There is a problem with lack of lubrication to these parts. It applies to Sable | Taurus | Windstar vehicles with AXOD family of transmissions. AXOD-E, AX4N, AX4S. Use only high quality fluid, keep it fresh and up to level and be sure your cooling system working properly. There are updates that can be made during a rebuild to help prevent this.
